The City Council interviewed 24 candidates at the January 11, 2017 City Council meeting to fill the City Council vacancy as a result of Gordon Siebert resigning half way through his term.

Roles and Responsibilities of City Council

  • Hires and provides direction to City Manager & City Attorney
  • Serves as the policy making legislative body
  • Establishes priorities and goals
  • Adopts annual budget, enacts ordinances, approves major contracts
  • Serves on Council Committees and appointments to outside agencies
  • Appoints City Commissions

Eligibility

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Must be a resident of the City of Morgan Hill
  • Must be registered voter 
 

Term of Office

The term of this office will be from the day of appointment and will expire in December 2018.

Private Versus Public:

Becoming a candidate for public office means that information about you will become a matter of public record immediately.  This includes any and all documents submitted to the city during the course of the application period.  As such, these documents must, by law, be available to the public for inspection and/or copying.  Redacted copies of the submitted applications will be available on the City website.

General Information Regarding the Position:

Regular meetings of the City Council are held on the first, third and fourth Wednesdays of each month.  Additional meetings may be called as necessary. Council routinely schedules workshops before Council meetings, that typically start at 5:30 p.m.

In addition to regular Council business, the individual selected must be available to actively participate as a Council liaison to numerous external agencies and organizations. The City Council is the legislative body for the City of Morgan Hill. Members of the City Council also sit as members of the City of Morgan Hill Successor Agency to the Former Redevelopment Agency, Financing Authority, Wastewater Facilities Financing Authority, and Parking Authority.

In accordance with Government Code Section 87200 members of the City Council are subject to the State’s financial disclosure laws and Fair Political Practices Commission regulations and will be required to disclose their economic interests upon appointment to this office.

Currently members of the City Council receive a stipend of $313.00 per month.
